My bachelor research project

Due to my previous work experience in web- and software development for various projects for different clients (for more info, see the "About" section here), I have chosen the topic "Taking advantage of aggregated customer data to improve the interaction between offline and online business" for my Bachelor Research Thesis. The research therefore dealt with solutions or possibilities how data and information (that could be gathered at the 'Point of Sale' in stores and shopping malls) can be used more sufficently on the companies' web pages.
Some other students' research projects dealt with eCRM, the future and possible market segmentation of ePaper or the usability of web pages which make use of the Macromedia Flash technology.
My project can be divided into one theoretical and practical part;
The practical part explains and visualises the technical aspects of data collection, data housing and data mining, online as well as offline, and presents software examples for a better understanding. Those examples show the personalized part of the web page and its connection to the offline database.
The theoretical part explains the research projects' environment (Fundamental knowledge on relational databases, internet protocols, problems occuring while gathering data in the online environment, web standards, privacy, examples how online shops work), offers examples for usage and delivers results of a survey which was conducted with more than 250 participants. The survey aimed at customers' opinion on data collection and the special services which could be offered after collecting data. Such services could be handling of warranty, driver updates for bought hardware, product accessories, etc. in a personalized, secure area on the companies' web page.
The whole research project tried to find out in what extent a win-win situation for both customers and companies can be achieved by making use of such services and such data usage.
Current projects at the university lie emphasis on technical innovations, database development, automation of processes in the workflow and object oriented programming.
